"connection to mobile phone timed out"

I have been a long time WinMo user and have just got my first Android phone, a Dell Streak.

I'm running 2.1 for now, and had been using Dell PC Suite to synchronise my data between Outlook and the phone. This was reasonably successful (although it sometimes wanted to replace large amounts of my Outlook data even when nothing had changed on the phone, and tried to strip Categories from my calendar entries).

However, when I now try to synchronise, I always just get an error message - "connection to mobile phone timed out". This happens after about 12 minutes. I have tried rebooting both the phone and my PC and even syncing with an empty PST file, but to no avail.

I'm reluctant to do a hard reset on the phone (and anyway I'm expecting 2.2 shortly, when Dell PC Suite will stop working), but wonder whether anybody know how to fix this problem?
